Let’s Compare

This is used when something similar (B) happens in addition to something that has already occurred (A).

[Example]

It is raining and also windy.
⇒ It indicates that it was already raining, and then the wind started blowing as well.

Additionally, this is used not only to add a second piece of information (B) to the first one (A). In such cases, it cannot be replaced with “〜上うえに”.

[Examples]

When expressing an evaluation, “〜上うえに” is used.
In this context, not only one but a second reason is added to support the evaluation. The content of the evaluation must be either “positive + positive” or “negative + negative”.

[Examples]
Maria works hard, and on top of that, her sales performance is excellent.

This restaurant is expensive and, on top of that, the food is bad.

Additionally, “〜上うえに” is used not only for evaluations but also to express the speaker’s feelings.

[Example]

This job is not only tough but also poorly paid, so I’m thinking of quitting.

Furthermore, unlike “〜に加くわえて,” “〜上うえに” cannot be used at the end of a sentence that includes commands, prohibitions, requests, or invitations directed at the listener.

[Examples]
In addition to this job, could I also ask you to prepare the documents?
