Self-introduction

My name is Ben, and I’m currently working in Japan.

The reason I started learning Japanese

I first became interested in learning Japanese because of my fascination with Japan’s culture, particularly its history, anime, and gaming industries. Initially, my goal was to visit Japan and enjoy the country on a deeper level, but over time, I started to envision myself living and working in Japan.
That desire pushed me to keep studying Japanese and eventually take the JLPT. A few years ago, I passed the N2 level, which felt like a significant milestone because it allowed me to comfortably handle everyday conversations. However, I quickly realized that mastering Japanese for professional use would require more focused efforts.

The reason I chose Enuncia’s online lessons

The decision to pursue online lessons came about because I needed flexibility. Working full-time made it difficult to commit to in-person classes, so online lessons were the perfect solution. The ability to schedule classes around my workday was a huge benefit. Another advantage of online lessons is the one-on-one attention I receive from my Sensei. Compared to group lessons, where the pace and content are dictated by the needs of the group, online lessons allowed me to focus solely on the skills I needed to improve.

As for why I chose Enuncia specifically, there were a few factors. Firstly, Enuncia’s personalized approach appealed to me. While I had access to several language schools in Singapore before moving to Japan, Enuncia stood out because it allowed me to concentrate on the areas where I needed the most help—Business Japanese and job interview preparation. Additionally, the fact that Sensei had experience in career transitions and job hunting in Japan was incredibly valuable. It wasn’t just about language; it was about receiving practical, real-world advice on how to succeed in the Japanese workplace.

Lesson content

The primary focus of my lessons has been on mastering Business Japanese and trying the BJT exam. Learning how to use honorifics correctly was almost like learning a new language within Japanese itself. Another important topic in my lessons was preparing for job interviews in Japan. One of the most memorable parts of my lessons was the role-playing exercises. Sensei and I would simulate actual interviews, allowing me to practice professionally responding to questions. This hands-on practice was incredibly useful and gave me confidence heading into real interviews.

Outcomes

Since starting lessons with Enuncia, I’ve seen significant improvements in both my keigo and my overall business communication skills. Before, I was confident in casual conversations, but I often struggled when it came to professional interactions. The biggest area of growth has been my ability to use keigo more comfortably.

Another noticeable improvement is my daily communication in Japanese. While English is the primary language used in my workplace, Japanese plays a crucial role in my daily interactions with colleagues and clients. Being able to use Japanese has been essential to my success.

Support and environment

The support from Sensei has been fantastic. I appreciate the flexibility of being able to schedule lessons that fit around my work commitments, and my tutor has always been accommodating when changes arise. The lessons are tailored to my specific goals, and I never feel like I’m wasting time on things that aren’t relevant to my progress.

The environment during lessons is also very supportive. Sensei provides detailed feedback and is always patient, even when I make repeated mistakes. I particularly appreciate the role-playing exercises, as they replicate real-world situations I face in my job. This practice has been invaluable in building my confidence.

The challenges of studying Japanese

One of the biggest challenges in learning Japanese has been mastering keigo and understanding cultural nuances in business settings. Even after reaching N2, I found that formal Japanese is almost a different language.
Another challenge has been vocabulary expansion. Japanese meetings often introduce words or expressions that aren’t commonly found in textbooks.

Goal and Comment

My primary goal is to continue improving my business Japanese skills, particularly in keigo and professional communication. In the future, I hope to take on more responsibilities at work that require advanced Japanese proficiency. Ultimately, I would like to reach N1 level and become fully fluent, able to handle complex conversations and negotiations in Japanese.

To anyone learning Japanese, my advice is to stay persistent. The language can be challenging, especially when it comes to formal speech, but with the right guidance and consistent effort, it’s possible to make steady progress. I’m grateful for the support I’ve received through Enuncia, and I look forward to continuing my journey toward fluency.
