Q: What is the difference between “将来“and “未来“?
A: Both refer to “the time ahead” or “the future,” but they are used in different contexts.
“将来” is often used for specific things that are connected to the present, such as a person’s life, career, plans, or an organization.
In contrast, “未来” is often used to refer to the future as a period of time itself, or to broader themes such as society, the world, or humanity.
Let’s take a closer look at each one.
将来 (JLPT N4)
“将来” refers to what lies ahead as a continuation of the present.
It is especially used when talking about a person’s life, career, plans, a company, or other things whose future is considered based on their current situation.
① Talking about a person’s life or dreams
[Examples]
My dream for the future is to become a soccer player.
I want to become a pastry chef in the future.
In this way, “将来” is natural when talking about the course of your life from the present onward, such as what you want to do or what kind of job you want to have.
For this reason, expressions such as the following are commonly used:
• 将来の夢 — future dream
• 将来の仕事 — future career
• 将来の目標 — future goal
• 将来のために勉強する — study for the future
② Talking about future plans or prospects
[Examples]
I’m thinking about my future with her.
A large building is planned to be built here in the future.
“将来” can be used not only for people, but also for companies, regions, countries, and similar entities.
[Examples]
I’m worried about the future of the company.
We need to think about Japan’s future.
In these cases as well, “将来” refers to what will happen to something that already exists, such as a company or Japan, as it continues from the present into the future.

未来 (JLPT N3)
When time is divided into three periods—“past,” “present,” and “future”—the time that comes after the present is called “未来.”
Compared with “将来,” “未来” is often used when referring more broadly to the time ahead or to the future world itself.
① Talking about broad topics such as society, the world, or humanity
[Examples]
I want to see what the Earth will be like in the future.
What will the future of humanity be like?
“未来” is often used when thinking about what lies ahead on a large scale, such as society, the Earth, humanity, or science.
For example:
• 未来の世界 — the future world
• 未来の地球 — the Earth in the future
② Talking about an unknown world that lies ahead
[Examples]
What would you do if someone came from the future?
I wonder what life will be like in the future.
In science fiction and imaginary settings, “未来” is used more often than “将来.” This is because it refers not so much to “your own plans from now on,” but to the time or world that exists beyond the present.

Let’s Compare
Depending on the sentence, both words can sometimes be used.
[Examples]
Think about Japan’s future.
Think about the future of Japan.
Both are natural, but the nuance is slightly different.
→ A more realistic view of how Japan, as it is now, will develop from this point onward.
→ A broader image of what kind of society or country Japan will become in the future.
In other words, the meanings of “将来” and “未来” are not completely separate.
A useful way to remember the difference is that “将来” is used when talking about what will happen to yourself or something that already exists, while “未来” is used when talking about the time or world that lies ahead.
