Let’s Compare
The difference between “不” and “非” is easier to understand if you think of them like this:
| 不 | 非 |
|---|---|
| Often negates a state or quality | Often negates a category, condition, or standard |
| “not ~,” “lacking ~,” “undesirable” | “not ~,” “does not fit ~,” “outside ~” |
However, you cannot freely choose between “不” and “非” based only on these differences.
For example:
不安 ○ 非安 ×
不完全 ○ 非完全 ×
非公開 ○ 不公開 ×
非公式 ○ 不公式 ×
Therefore, when learning new vocabulary, do not memorize only the meanings of “不” and “非.” Instead, learn each expression as a complete word, such as “不安,” “不完全,” “非公開,” and “非公式.”
