[When They Are Interchangeable]
[Examples]
◯ 彼は有名な音楽家です。
He is a famous musician.
◯ 彼は著名な音楽家です。

Both sentences are natural, but they emphasize slightly different things.
“有名な音楽家” focuses on the fact that the musician is known by many people.
“著名な音楽家” suggests that the musician has earned recognition and a strong reputation in the field of music.
[When They Are Not Interchangeable]
[Examples]
◯ この俳優は、スキャンダルで有名です。

× この俳優はスキャンダルで著名です。
“著名” is normally used for people who are known for their achievements or socially recognized work in a professional field.
Therefore, it sounds unnatural when someone is known for a negative reason, such as scandals or a bad reputation.
[Examples]
