Q: Is there a difference between “近く” and “そば” ?
A: Both words indicate that something is a short distance from a particular place.
However, “そば” generally gives a stronger impression that something is very close to the reference point.
In addition, “近く” can be used not only for places but also for time and quantity.
“そば” cannot be used in these ways.

① A place close to a person or object
② Being physically close to or beside a person or living creature
③ Emotionally supporting or watching over someone

Both “近
However, they generally differ in the following way:
• “近
• “そば”: a place immediately next to the reference person or object
For example, let’s compare the following two sentences.

There is a convenience store near my house.
⇒ It may be several dozen to several hundred meters away from the house.

家
There is a convenience store near my house.
⇒ It is very close to the house, usually within several dozen meters.
Both sentences are correct.
However, “家
The actual distance varies depending on the speaker and the situation. Therefore, there is no fixed rule stating exactly how many meters “近

“近
In these cases, it cannot be replaced with “そば.”

“そば” can express not only physical closeness but also the idea that someone is providing emotional support.
