Let’s Compare
First, let’s think about the basic meaning of each word.
① One thing changes in accordance with the change of another thing
② To accept and follow an order, instruction, rule, etc.
① When something changes, something related to it also changes together
② Another thing happens together with something
Cases where both can be used
When B changes in accordance with the change of A, as in the following example, neither expression sounds very unnatural.
[Example]
As I age, my body has become weaker.
When “〜に従って” is used, it emphasizes that B gradually changes in accordance with the change of A.
In this example, it gives the image that as the change of “getting older” progresses, the change of “the body becoming weaker” also progresses little by little.
When “〜に伴って” is used, it emphasizes that B happens together with A, or that B happens in relation to the change of A.
In this example, it gives the image that “getting older” and “the body becoming weaker” are related and happen together.
With this point in mind, let’s look at the following examples.
[Example]
As the company’s performance worsened, the number of employees being reduced increased.
Due to the worsening of the company’s performance, 100 employees were laid off.
“〜に従って” is easy to use when B gradually changes in accordance with the change of A.
Therefore, it works well with sentences where B also changes in stages, as in “as the company’s performance worsened, the number of employees being reduced increased.”
On the other hand, “〜に伴って” is easy to use when B happens in relation to A.
Therefore, it can be used to express that one event happened in connection with another event, as in “due to the worsening of the company’s performance, 100 employees were laid off.”
Cases where only “〜に従って” can be used
When acting according to “laws, rules, instructions, instruction manuals,” etc., “〜に従って” is used. In this meaning, it cannot be replaced with “〜に伴って.”
[Examples]
Please dispose of the garbage according to the local rules.
Let’s go to the square according to the teacher’s instructions.
Cases where only “〜に伴って” can be used
When B happens together with A, or B happens in relation to A, “〜に伴って” is used.
In this case, replacing it with “〜に従って” sounds unnatural.
[Examples]
Due to road construction, this road will be closed for two weeks.
