Q: What is the difference between “〜込こむ” and “〜続つづける”?

A: “〜込こむ” expresses that an action goes deeply into something, while “〜続つづける” expresses that an action continues without interruption.

〜込こむ (JLPT N3)

[Meaning]
Expresses that a certain state continues for a long time

[Rule]
[V] Verb stem + 込こむ

[Examples]

将来しょうらいのことを考かんがえ込こんでいたら、いつの間まにか夜よるになっていました。
I was thinking deeply about my future, and before I realized it, it was already night.

試験しけんに落おちて、しばらく落おち込こんでいました。

I failed the exam and felt down for a while.

“〜込こむ” has various uses, but in general, it expresses that an action goes deeply into something, becomes focused, or continues for a long time.
Compared to a simple action, it carries additional nuances of depth, intensity, and persistence.

[Examples]
彼かれはそのうわさを本当ほんとうのことだと信しんじ込こんでいるようです。

He seems to be convinced that the rumor is true.

母ははは編あみ物ものに打うち込こんでいます。
My mother is absorbed in knitting.

風邪かぜをこじらせて、一いっ週間しゅうかんも寝ね込こんでしまいました。

I caught a bad cold and ended up bedridden for a whole week.

〜続つづける (JLPT N4)

[Meaning]
Expresses that an action or state continues for a long time

[Rule]
[V] Verb stem + 続つづける

[Examples]
彼かれは何なん度ど失敗しっぱいしても挑戦ちょうせんし続つづけています。

He keeps trying no matter how many times he fails.

彼かれは自分じぶんの夢ゆめを信しんじ続つづけてきました。
He has continued to believe in his dream.

彼女かのじょはさっきから泣なき続つづけています。

She has been crying for a while now.

“〜続つづける” expresses that an action or habit continues for a long time or over an extended period, or that an effect or state remains ongoing.

[Examples]
友達ともだちは夢ゆめについてずっと話はなし続つづけていました。

My friend kept talking about his dream for a long time.
⇒ This means that the friend continued the action of talking for a long period of time.

雨あめが三みっ日間かかんも降ふり続つづけています。
It has been raining for three days.

あの店みせは何十なんじゅう年ねんも地域ちいきに愛あいされ続つづけています。

That shop has been loved by the local community for decades.

Let’s Compare

“〜込こむ” and “〜続つづける” may look similar at first glance, but their nuances are different. Let’s look at “話はなし込こむ” and “話はなし続つづける” as examples. Both share the idea of “talking for a long time,” but the focus of meaning differs.

[Example]
① 今後こんごの方針ほうしんについて話はなし込こみました。
② 今後こんごの方針ほうしんについて話はなし続つづけました。

① “話はなし込こむ” means “to talk seriously and deeply about something,” focusing on the depth and intensity of the content. As a result, it implies that the conversation naturally lasted a long time.
② “話はなし続つづける” focuses on the continuity of the act of talking itself. It emphasizes the ongoing nature of the action rather than the depth of the content.

Based on this difference, which sentence sounds more natural?

[Example]
① 友達ともだちは楽たのしい思おもい出でを話はなし込こみました。
② 友達ともだちは楽たのしい思おもい出でを話はなし続つづけました。

The correct answer is ②.
“話はなし込こむ” is used for serious or deep topics, so it doesn’t fit with a light subject like “fun memories.”
On the other hand, “〜続つづける” can be used regardless of the topic and is suitable even for casual or cheerful conversations.

There is also a difference in the relationship between the speaker and the listener.

[Example]
① 誰だれも聞きいていないのに、政治せいじ家かは話はなし込こんでいます。
② 誰だれも聞きいていないのに、政治せいじ家かは話はなし続つづけています。

The correct answer is ②.
“〜続つづける” can be used even when the speaker is talking one-sidedly, while “〜込こむ” is used when both people are facing each other and having a mutual conversation.

[Example]
〇 子こどもはよく分わからないことを話はなし続つづけています。
× 子こどもはよく分わからないことを話はなし込こんでいます。

The child keeps talking about things that don’t make much sense.
⇒ Since the child is speaking one-sidedly and the listener is not responding, “話はなし続つづけている” (keeps talking) is the more natural expression.
