Q: What is the difference between “探さがす” and “探さぐる” ?

A: Both share the common meaning of “trying to find,” but “探さがす” refers to the act of looking for something visible, while “探さぐる” refers to carefully investigating unseen information or situations.
Let’s take a closer look.

[Meaning]
The act of trying to find something you want, such as an object or a person

I’m looking for a new job.

“探さがす” refers to searching for concrete and visible things such as people, objects, or places.
It describes a clear action of trying to find something by actually looking with the eyes or feeling with the hands.

[Examples]

I’m looking for a good Japanese book. Do you know any?

It mainly refers to investigating abstract things such as information, situations, feelings (mental states), or unknown matters carefully and cautiously.

It is also used when trying to find something that cannot be seen directly, relying on hands or senses.

[Examples]

Let’s Compare

In the following cases, which expression is more appropriate?

[Examples]

The correct answer is ①.
At first glance, “destined person” might seem abstract, but since the target is a concrete being (“a person”), “探さがす” is the correct usage.

Now, let’s look at another example.

[Examples]

The correct answer is ②.
